Royal Support From Recovering Coach

* Hopkins Royals 78, Roosevelt Teddies 51: Acting Head Coach Mike Gidley did a nice job leading the team in the absence of Head Coach Brian Cosgriff, who is recovering from pancreatitis. However, Coach Cosgriff made the trip to the Hopkins Lindbergh Center and watched the game from the indoor tracks upstairs. Hopkins' Stephanie Sension led four players in double figures with 21 points, 18 rebounds and 5 assists. Caitlin Rowland had 15, Jenna Lillemoe and Kara Elofson scored 10 points each. Roosevelt's AunDreah Aune had 16, and Kiara Strickland finished with 13.

The Owls continue the balanced scoring as follows:
* Jenny Noordmans, 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 steals

This is a very impressive commitment. ESPN / USA Today Poll ranks the Colonials at #13. "I'm just happy that I am going to a school that I know is good academically and athletically," said Allums. The Colonials play in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Allums is a gifted athlete who can do a lot of damage in the open court with her ability

to push and attack. Allums has been a starting varsity player since 9th grade. She was MVP in her 9th grade year and All Conference 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. Keen Court Vision in Becker

gPrep spent the day at the Breakdown Fall League in Becker sharpening its court vision. I found ballers working hard to step up their games. Here’s the inside scoop on six impact players who caught my eye. Princeton’s Junior Katie Loberg established a physical and dominant style of play that dictates tempo. Loberg is blessed with a lot of talent. Moorhead’s Senior Kelsey Jacobson is lights-out from outside and is highly skilled when taking it to the hole, a total package. Jacobson’s teammate Junior Kassie Hooten is strong in the post and a big time player. Watertown-Mayer’s Senior Bridget Boll is an impact player with takeover ability. Elk River’s Junior Tempestt Wilson is an underrated superstar and a great team leader. Becker’s Senior Brianna Mastey is strong in the post and has branched out her game. Mastey is now playing the point guard position and knocking down three pointers. There’s no doubt she is getting ready for the next level at the University of Minnesota.

Q & A With Hopkins' Caitlyn Rowland

“For me I know I learned a lot from older players like Leslie Knight and other players that were so gracious to give me their time and teach me things. I think it’s a real fun experience to try and help younger girls. You know, show them a couple of things here or there. Just help keep them motivated. I think it’s a real important thing to do.” More

Team Chemistry

When Metro Stars Head Coach Brian Frye instructed his players to spend the evening together as a team away from basketball, he had no idea they would take that time to find a way to
bring basketball back into the equation. The team bought t-shirts. They wrote “The Frye Squad” on the tees. Point Guard Courtney Boylan said,“It was just a team thing that we decided to do.”

Tayler Hill To Get Big Ten Assist

Minneapolis South Junior Tayler Hill’s big brother is  bound for the Big Ten. PJ Hill Jr. recently signed with powerhouse Ohio State. Expect little sis to gain court tips from her brother’s Big Ten experience.
The 6’2” 165 pound point guard’s aggressive defense caught the Buckeyes’ attention. PJ Hill Jr. is set to play this season. And you can bet when big brother’s home in the off season, he’ll put on a Big Ten clinic for little sis. The Lady Tiger is sure to sharpen her claws and her game.

AAU Statement Week

The district championships will be held at Cooper High School June 1-3.

At stake are a state championship ticket and a shot at a national championship.

This weekend gPrep will focus on the girls 16u bracket. The big three are North Tartan-Larson, NC Heat, and Minnesota Stars-Hested with Brittney McSparron, Georgiedda Jones, Theairra Taylor, Brianna Mastey, Kiara Allums, Kelsey Jacobson, and Emily Becken just to name a few.

Meanwhile, a very good story line is brewing after the Minnesota Stars made a 62-57 "statement"against North Tartan-Larson in an upset win at Forest Lake High School two weeks ago on May 20th. The Teams could meet again this Sunday in the semi-finals. North Tartan-Larson is a team loaded with all Division One players. Look for Kiara Buford, Hannah Draxten, Jackie Voigt and Kamille Whalin to make a statement of their own. North Tartan will be looking to get some payback against a very scrappy and talented Minnesota Stars-Borowicz team, 4th seed. The Stars' young guns are Kate Thompson, Brittany Chambers and Leah Dietel.

NC Heat and Coach Paul Hill are also loaded with talent. They're the 2nd seed. But, any team with Minnesota's premiere player Tayler Hill, Ephesia Holmes, Megan Nipe, Courtney Kranz and Katya Leick is capable of winning it all. Look for NC Heat to heat up... come Statement Week.

                TRANSFER RULE PASSED 48-0

The new transfer rule took effect on March 30, 2007. The Minnesota State High School League members voted unanimously 48 to 0 in favor of a new transfer rule designed to help even competition and discourage the creation of so-called "all-star" teams. Under the new rule,  high school athletes, who transfer to a new school without changing addresses, would become ineligible for varsity competition for one year. The Rule does not apply to private schools.

Two Words: Don Imus

The world watched the three word implosion of the Rutgers women’s basketball team’s psych, self worth, pride… not to mention the team’s historic winning season followed by their first ever trip to the NCAA Championship. Imus says he wasn’t drunk or angry last week when he called the players quote “nappy headed hos” after Rutgers’ loss to the University of Tennessee. MORE ON IMUS

Curtain Call STATE RECORD!

Champlin Park's Jenny Theisen shares a state record for consecutive free throws without a miss. Thiesen went 18-18 in a big comeback win against Centennial. Theisen also came up big in the state tournament leading the Rebels to a 3rd place finish against Edina. The report on Theisen is: clutch under pressure, lights-out from the line and from distance, team leader, runs the floor well, and plays hard-nose defense.
