BULLDOGS VS. UNDERDOGS

The top seeded Becker Bulldogs captured their first ever state championship at the Minneapolis Target Center. Down by one point with seconds left on the clock, the 31-1 Lady Bulldogs clamped down… to snatch the 3A state title away from the underdogs DeLaSalle Islanders. The March Madness match-up was nothing short of a nail biter Saturday, March 17th. But it wasn’t Top Dog Star Forward Brianna Mastey who hit Becker’s winning basket. It was pup Sophomore guard Ray Robinson. The 6'1 guard sank a pull-up 10- foot jumper with 1.2 remaining on the clock to beat DeLaSalle, 41 to 39. Becker Head Coach Justin Hegna said, "She probably doesn’t know how good she really is. It's fitting to see her finish it out, hitting that final shot."

It was Becker's first trip to the state tournament. The Bulldogs and Islanders pounded each other in the paint. Neither team led by more than four points. The game was tied 13 times. Meanwhile, the other big story of the night was the Lady Bulldogs' big bond. Mastey, who’s carried Becker on her shoulders all season, would now carry teammate Chelsea Lieser.  Lieser was injured in the last minute of play. The Bulldog guard couldn’t walk onto the floor for the state championship presentation.

Wanting Lieser to experience the thrill of receiving the championship medal, Mastey put Lieser on her back and walked to get the medal. "She’s a great player. She put it all out today. When your teammate gets hurt, you just want to be there for them to pick them up, especially when she played just a great game .You've got to be there for them", said Mastey.

Becker was ranked by gprep all season as the #10 team in the state regardless of class. The Lady Bulldogs came down to the Target Center and took care of business. Mastey said "It’s an experience that we’ll never forget. Now that we have one, especially with our first tip here, It’s just feels great to take the title on your first time down here".
