100-0 Win Controversy Prompts Coach Firing, Fair or Foul?

On January 25th, a Texas girls high school basketball coach was fired following his team’s blowout of Dallas Academy. The Covenant, a private Christian school, beat the Bulldogs 100-0 on January 13th. Prior to his firing, Covenant Coach Micah Grimes emailed a local newspaper that he would not apologize for quote “a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity.” But, some disagree. At halftime, Covenant was up 59 to 0. Last week, the school posted a statement on its website, calling the game’s scoring regretful and embarrassing. Covenant said “This clearly does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition.”  Coach Grimes, who’s been heavily criticized for letting the game get so far out of hand, doesn’t agree. Many have questioned his motives for “running up” the score. Others have defended it, saying the girls were allowed to play to their potential. Parents attending the game said Covenant continued to make 3-pointers even in the fourth quarter, as fellow players, assistant coaches and fans cheered wildly. NO one blames the players. Dallas Academy has been winless over the last four seasons. The one-sided win landed the Bulldogs in the national  spotlight and won them recognition for refusing to give up. What do you think? Was the 100-0 victory poor sportsmanship or, was the basketball game being played the way founding fathers intended?
