2009 week 15-20

Girls State Tournament Tips Off Wednesday

* The final road to the 2009 State Girls’ Basketball Tournament ends at the Target Center, Saturday March 21st. It’s been a long team journey filled with injuries, adversity, uncertainties, setbacks, courage, practice, triumphs, hope and perseverance.

The coveted championship crown is up for grabs. Eight teams per class will compete for greatness. Defending Class 1A Champion Ada-Borup is back, so is Pipestone Area and New Life Academy. Braham is retuning to the state tournament, largely due to the brilliant play of 8th grade phenom Becca Dahlman.

The top seed Class 4A Minneapolis South Lady Tigers are making their third consecutive trip to the state tournament led by Tayler Hill, 2009 McDonald’s All American. Also making their third consecutive trip to the big dance are the Class 2A Jordan Jaguars, led by the dynamic duo of Leah Dietel and Brittany Chambers, the state record holder for the most points scored in a tournament game (47 points in 2008). Expect the Lady Tigers and the Lady Jaguars to pounce on their prey and try to claw their way to a state title. The 2009 State Girls Basketball Tournament is filled with great hoops stories. The Centennial Cougars will be led by Bridget Schuneman and Megan Nipe, who’s played with pain all season because of a knee injury. Nipe is now healthy again. Look for the Cougars to put on a good show now that they are at the big dance.

Class 3A Champion Totino-Grace is back to defend its title. But, New Prague will be looking to clip the Eagles’ wings. Eastview also returns. The Lightning is led by sharp shooter, Sam Mehr, who’s deadly from the perimeter. Eden Prairie, with its balance scoring attack, is making its first ever trip to the dance.

Finally, the team making the most noise is perhaps the Minneapolis North Polars, led by “The Senior” Briana Edwards and four eighth-graders. The Polars played a very difficult schedule and have emerged as a contender for the Class 3A Championship. But, nothing is promised. To win the state championship title will take determination, focus, skills, leadership, sacrifice, role playing, heart, HUNGER and great coaching. Simply put, bring your “A” game.

The Madness Of It All

March has finally arrived! So, let the madness begin! It’s perhaps the single most important month in high school basketball, a time when state champions are crowned.

Teams, 1A to 4A, work season-round, playing through adversity, pain and injury, for a chance to compete against Minnesota’s elite. For, it’s a winding road heavily traveled, littered with dashed dreams, player promises, hope for an upset and the will to win.

Listen and you can hear, the heart of a baller as she pounds the ball into the hardwood, before attacking her opponent, defying gravity, then exploding to
basket. That’s the kind of basketball that ignites passion on the court and in the stands.

Simply put, we’re mad for the game, the players who sacrifice and leave everything on the court, the art of competition, the amazing athleticism and the desire for overall greatness.
